It's that time of year again. Candidates for the Ohio legislature are trying to woo voters as another election season approaches. This year especially, with new legislative districts drawn, candidates will be out in force engaging with the public on a mission to retain or win their House or Senate seats.

This time is a fantastic opportunity to engage candidates on an issue that is important to you: School Choice. It's also an opportunity to get to know them before they are elected. Below are some tips on where to find candidates and how to encourage them to support School Choice if they are elected in November.

Don't be shy! Political candidates need to know what is important to you. Below are some tips to keep in mind when reaching out to your candidates.

  • Share your personal story, and ask your candidates if they support school choice.
  • Don't be argumentative or disrespectful if a candidate expresses a negative view of school choice. Simply try to sway their opinion through reason and insight on the matter.
  • If they aren't familiar with the issue, give them School Choice Ohio's website and offer to meet with them to discuss the issue in more detail.

      How to Engage your Candidates

Social Networking: Are you on Facebook? Twitter? Chances are your legislative candidates are too.

Facebook – Candidates will usually have fan pages where they post information. You can also post questions to the candidates on these pages and start discussions

Twitter – Candidates will often use Twitter to send out brief statements or to promote issues. You can send your candidates a message on Twitter asking questions about school choice issues. Try to stick to yes/no questions due to the limit on the number of characters in a response.

Candidates About Town: The best way for candidates to meet and interact with voters is through old-fashioned "get out the vote" activities.

Door-to-Door Campaigning – If a candidate comes to your house, be sure to engage them with questions about school choice, and try to find out where they stand on the issue.

Community Nights – Many civic organizations will host candidate forums where they can debate each other or discuss issues with the public. Attend these events, and ask polite but pointed questions about where they stand on school choice issues.

Festivals or Sporting Events – Often, candidates will set up a booth at festivals, county fairs, carnivals, etc. to spend time talking with voters. Don't be afraid to approach the candidates and ask them questions about their positions on school choice issues or legislation.

Host an Event: If you are interested in hosting an event with a candidate, School Choice Ohio can help. Email info@scohio.org or call 614-223-1555 for more info.
